It is my great pleasure to invite you to join me, and a group of thought leaders in skin cancer on Hamilton Island in August 2011 for what promises to be a stimulating conference and series of workshops. The School of Medicine at the University of Queensland together with its partner HealthCert has been delivering workshops on skin cancer for primary care physicians for 5 years now, and has been delivering the world's only Master of Medicine in skin cancer for the same period; this will be the second annual conference. We are taking a group of leaders in the field to the wonderful Hamilton Island to run some practical workshops, a series of exciting plenary presentations, and to offer some very pleasant social activities. A key feature of the conference will be debates, discussions, and moderated questions from the floor. Come along and take an active part in your learning.

We are delighted to once again have Professor Geppi Argenziano and Professor Iris Zalaudek leading the scientific input from overseas, with surgeon Dr Adam Riker, Medical Director of the Ochsner Cancer Institute, New Orleans, USA joining the team. Professor Peter Soyer, UQ's Professor of Dermatology will also be playing a key role. Key national thought leaders presenting include Professor Adele Green and Dr David Whiteman of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, and Professor Ian Frazer of UQ's Diamantina Institute has provisionally accepted our invitation to give a keynote plenary and to also speak at the conference dinner. We are delighted to welcome Professor Scott Menzies from Sydney and Professor Peter Harvey from Newcastle who will also be playing critical roles in bringing us all right up to date on key issues.

So, if you have an interest in skin cancer, and want to update your knowledge and skills, and learn what is new from the acknowledged leaders in the field, block out these dates in your diary now.

New Promises in Adjuvant Therapy of Melanoma.
Professor Peter Hersey. University of Sydney.
Melanoma Institute Australia and Newcastle Melanoma Unit.

“Although cutaneous melanoma is cured in the majority of patients by the initial surgical treatment, once it spread from the skin to distant sites in the body it has been very difficult to treat.

The factors associated with risk of distant spread are well established and have provided a basis for selection of patients at high risk for trials of treatment that might improve the cure rate in such patients.”

Professor Hersey will present the latest exciting results in immunotherapy trials and potential adjuvant therapies for metastatic melanoma. The full presentation will be held on Friday 5th August at 3.30pm-4.15pm.

Professor Scott Menzies secured as keynote presenter.

Scott will be delivering a 30 minute keynote address on digital imaging and monitoring of moles as part of a special session at the conference. Also speaking in this session will be Iris Zalaudek from Italy who will be talking about the best practice approach to managing patients with multiple nevi. The session will conclude with a panel discussion with several primary care doctors who will talk about 'how they do it' in their practice. This special session will be chaired by Professor Peter Soyer, Chair in Dermatology at The University of Queensland.

Hamilton Island overwhelmingly selected as the 2011 location

At the recent 2010 University of Queensland Skin Cancer Conference and via email survey over 93% of the doctors surveyed selected Hamilton Island as their preferred location for the 2011 Skin Cancer Conference.  We are pleased to announce we have secured this amazing location for the conference and workshops.
